Pipelayer - Underground Utilities Job Summary We are seeking experienced Pipelayers to join our civil construction team in Colorado Springs. This position works as part of an underground utility crew installing water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems. The ideal candidate understands proper pipe installation from trench preparation through final backfill and takes pride in building systems correctly, safely, and efficiently. We are looking for people who understand that good underground work is a team effort. Pipelayers work closely with operators, laborers, and crew leadership and are expected to communicate, stay engaged, and understand what needs to happen next—not simply wait to be told what to do. What We Are Looking For We’re looking for pipelayers who know their craft and take pride in putting pipe in the ground correctly. A skilled pipelayer understands more than how to make a connection. They understand grade, bedding, pipe materials, fittings, trench conditions, and how their work affects everything that follows. The right candidate pays attention to the details, communicates with the operator and the rest of the crew, anticipates the next step, and is willing to do whatever task is needed to keep the crew moving. Essential Duties and Responsibilities · Install water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer pipe and associated fittings and structures. · Prepare and maintain proper pipe bedding and trench conditions for installation. · Set pipe to the required line and grade. · Check elevations, slopes, and grades throughout installation. · Understand and work from survey stakes, hubs, offsets, and grade information. · Properly assemble pipe, fittings, valves, and other utility components according to project requirements. · Assist with installation of manholes, inlets, vaults, hydrants, valves, and other underground utility structures. · Work closely with equipment operators during excavation, pipe placement, backfill, and compaction. · Communicate clearly with operators when working in and around the excavation. · Understand utility locate markings, potholing requirements, and the importance of protecting existing utilities. · Inspect pipe, fittings, and materials before installation and identify damaged or incorrect materials. · Maintain proper trench housekeeping and keep the work area organized. · Assist with backfill, compaction, testing, and other activities required to complete the installation. · Safely use hand tools, power tools, compactors, pumps, lasers, and other equipment associated with underground utility construction. · Follow trench safety requirements and recognize changing excavation conditions. · Perform physical labor including lifting, carrying, shoveling, climbing, and working in and around excavations. · Follow company safety policies, project requirements, and supervisor direction. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities · 2+ years of underground utility construction experience preferred. · Experience installing water, sanitary sewer, and/or storm sewer systems strongly preferred. · Ability to set and maintain pipe to line and grade. · Experience using pipe lasers and understanding grade preferred. · Familiarity with common underground utility pipe, fittings, valves, and structures. · Ability to read and understand survey stakes, elevations, and grade information. · Ability to read and understand construction plans is a plus. · Understanding of safe trench and excavation practices. · Ability to communicate effectively with equipment operators and other crew members. · Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions. · Dependable transportation to jobsites in the Colorado Springs area. · Valid driver's license preferred. · Must be dependable, safety-conscious, and willing to work as part of a crew.
