Hairstylist Apprentice

Company Description Diaspora Salon is a boutique hair salon in Baltimore’s Old Goucher neighborhood, known for its team of highly skilled hairdressers specializing in naturally curly and coily hair types. The salon is dedicated to providing high-quality natural hair care services using holistic, plant-based products and advanced styling techniques tailored to each client. Diaspora Salon’s work is rooted in the preservation and continuance of Diasporic cultures and heritages outside of Africa through hairdressing. Role Description The Hairstylist Apprentice role is a full-time, on-site position based at Diaspora Salon in Baltimore, MD. The apprentice will assist senior stylists with client services, including preparing stations, shampooing, conditioning, detangling, and basic styling for naturally curly and coily hair. Daily tasks include learning and practicing cutting, styling, and treatment techniques, maintaining a clean and organized salon environment, and supporting smooth appointment flow. The role also involves engaging with clients in a welcoming, professional manner, observing and participating in consultations, and attending ongoing training to develop technical and cultural understanding of natural hair care.

Qualifications

Foundational skills in hair styling and hair care, with a strong interest in naturally curly and coily hair.Basic knowledge of cosmetology principles; enrollment in or completion of a cosmetology program is preferred.Strong customer Service skills, with a client-centered approach and a respectful, inclusive demeanor.Effective communication skills, including active listening and clear, professional interaction with clients and team members.Willingness to learn and take feedback, with attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work.Ability to stand for extended periods and perform hands-on work in a fast-paced salon environment.Interest in diasporic cultures, natural hair, and holistic, plant-based hair care products.
